A high-speed railway linking the city of Taiyuan, north China, and Xi'an in the northwest enter service in July 1.

The line is part of a 570 km high-speed railway Datong-Xi'an and reduce the travel time between the two cities to three hours over the previous time of 10 hours, according to the Society of Railways of China.

China has steadily expanded its rail network in recent years, and with the slowdown in economic growth, the government is planning to increase investment in the rail network, especially in relatively backward regions in the west of the country, to support growth.

China had a network of railroads combined population of over 100,000 km by the end of last year, including more than 10,000 km of high speed rail lines. The country is trying to expand the extent of iron lines to 120,000 km by 2020.
